Algae2Future

Prosjekt Avdeling: Uni Research Miljø (gruppe: Anvendt Bioteknologi) periode: 01.04.17 - 31.03.21

Om prosjektet

A2F’s vision is to lay the foundation for industrial microalgae production in Norway, utilizing natural resources and waste streams from existing production lines within agriculture, aquaculture and process industry.

  • A2F addresses key challenges that today limit sustainable and profitable use of microalgae based technologies.
  • Norway has special natural resources and favourable conditions for culturing microalgae, but also special needs for proteins and fatty acids for sustainable fish farming and agriculture industries
  • A successful A2F will demonstrate the potential for future development of a wide range of novel food and feed products, produced in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, utilizing natural resources and waste streams from existing industry, agriculture and aquaculture..
  • The potential benefits to society are considerable when producing high quality proteins and fatty acids, as well as other bioactive molecules, at the lowest possible trophic level without need for arable land.

The proposed value-chain follows targeted protein, fatty acids and starch-rich microalgae biomasses from labscale developed protocols, i.e. research-based innovation, to pilot scale production of microalgae in a network of photobioreactors and commercial actors, with microalgae biomass used in bread, fermented beverage and fish production as case studies. Furthermore, A2F integrates expertise on microalgae cultivation and optimisation at lab- and pilot scales, biorefining, baking and brewing technology, fish feed development, food quality and safety, bioeconomy, broadcast journalism and animation in a co-innovation framework. By targeting microalgae, A2F intends to explore their potential to be low-carbon-footprint healthy ingredients for future food and feed.

A2F brings Algae to the Future by integrating fundamental algae research and applied industrial practices. An international consortium of 20 partners has been formed to fulfil the objectives of this project, among which several Norwegian universities, resaerch institutes and industry, under the lead of NIBIO. A2F envisages that the knowledge and technology platform provided by the project will create a viable microalgae industry as a part of the new Norwegian bio economy within the next 10 to 15 years.
