General practitioner, supervisor in family medicine
Stein Nilsen took his medical degree in 1981 at the University of Bergen. After internship in Floro, he has worked as a general practitioner at the Medical Centre in Florvåg, Askøy. He has been employed as an advisory consultant in National Insurance / NAV since 1998. He is also leader of the Norwegian Medical Association committee on physician health, and has been supporting colleague in Hordaland Medical Association since 1996.
He has at times had part-time employment at the Department of Community Health UiB and Uni Research, and has in recent years worked with his PhD project "GP gatekeeper: experiences, challenges, handling and consequences."
Nilsen defended his thesis in 2018. His dissertation was called: «GPs´ experiences as gate-keepers - challenges, handling and consequences».
His research interests are related to GPs' work with sick leave and their handling of the gatekeeper role.
